Madison filmmaker and Talmadge Street resident Gretta Wing Miller of Downtown Dailies The Turkeys of Atwood Avenue chronicles the year humans shared their neighborhood with a flock of wild turkeys (23 minutes).
The World of Jumanji (part 1)
Keasion Griffin is the 53704 Frame by Frame Film Festival’s fellow. A 2023 graduate of East High School, he would like to be an actor or a director. When he was young, he wanted to make videos of things he liked or loved and have fun with filming with his friends. “Now I have a chance to show people what I like to do and maybe go live my dream!” he says. La’Leyah McKinney, Lakeithrie Bass and Ronnie Ricks join Keasion in the cast.
Night Trees
Sean Welch, an artist and musician residing at Troy Gardens Co-housing on the north side of Madison, shot the film Night Trees (45 minutes) as an homage to his favorite silent movies.
Peacemongers
Morgan D. Stewart is a mass media maniac and hopes to continue her own personal journey toward peace as an actor/ writer/ producer. She’s a transplant from California, who got her master’s in media studies from The New School in NY, filmed Peacemongers in Oshkosh, and will forever love her time living on the east side of Madison in 53704.
Carve
Ian Taylor and brothers Isaac and Luc Nadeau grew up in 53704, and Isaac lives on Willard Avenue with his family. Carve is a 25-minute version of Carve the Runes the trio made about a research biologist and his younger brother who has come to visit him in Scotland after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. Traveling together, they wrestle with Oz’s impending death, Cai’s estrangement from his wife, and how climate change is affecting the world around them.
Mike, Rosie & Lorin
Jess Haven got to know 53704 residents Mike Rowin, Rosie Keller and Lorin Larson in July 2015 through a coworker. (25 minutes)
Horizon Revealed
Presenting the 2023 class slideshow of Horizon, Wisconsin’s only recovery high school, with an introduction by Brian Kelley. In his final project, Tom Garver (Jan. 23, 1934 – June 9, 2023) partnered with friend, photographer and artist Brian Kelley to produce a class slideshow for Horizon and encourage the students’ appreciation of photography. Tom was curator and director of several American art museums for almost 30 years and was director of the Madison Art Center from 1980 to 1987. Tom was resident and owner of the brick building at 1962 and 1964 Atwood Avenue at Schenk’s Corners.
Tabletop Studios
John May and Nelle Burke of Talmadge Street bring the inanimate to life in mixed media stop-motion animation with about 30 minutes of shorts.
Heads Up
Heads Up is a 15-minute narrative Zach Kmiec shot opportunistically during a road trip with cofilmmaker Francis Zaander. Zach grew up on Oakridge Avenue and now resides on Madison’s north side.
The Indicators
Kurt Sensenbrenner is an award-winning documentary media maker with his office in the 53704 ZIP code. The Indicators (10 minutes) describes how two girls in Panama address the effects of deforestation.
Full Circle and Davenport
Michelle Kelley was born in the 53704. The subjects of her 12-minute film Full Circle work in the 53704. Michelle’s great-grandmother, Lilian Sather, the subject of Davenport (2 minutes), spent her final years happily nestled in north side senior living apartments. Michelle found herself returning full circle when her family moved into their home on the north side of Madison.
Birth of Gruul
At a remote research facility, four scientists make a groundbreaking discovery and are thrust into a world of terror. The easily frightened should avert their eyes from the horrifying… BIRTH OF GRUUL! Brothers Joe and Sam Ashenbrenner grew up on Talmadge Street. They and three cousins have been making small movies together for nearly 10 years. On every holiday, when the family gets together, the quintet secludes themselves to discuss and film a project in the limited time they have together. The eight-minute Birth of Gruul is their June 2023 project.
Neptune and Mover
Jackson Jarvis (formerly Jackson Eagan) grew up on Willard Avenue and is a professional filmmaker in New York City. He directed two 53704 pieces: In Neptune, Calvin comes from the big city to Neptune, Wisconsin, where his father bought a foreclosed house after breaking up with his girlfriend. Equal parts ghost story and dance film, Mover is a 10-minute narrative exploring heartbreak and healing during a nightmarish apartment move. Tilly Evans-Krueger stars.
Keep Spinning: A B-Side Story
Mitch Deitz grew up on Ohio Avenue in the 53704 ZIP code. An alum of East High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he lives and makes films in Chicago. In 2019 he directed and filmed Hotdish Hoedown: The Endless Table for Ohio Avenue Productions.
Awa’s Story
Awa Sibi is opening a West African restaurant, Les Delices de Awa, at 2045 Atwood Avenue in January 2024. United Way of Dane County shares a video about how its Boardwalk Academy opened doors for Awa to connect with a community that has helped her along the way. She will be accepting orders for pick up or delivery on Nov. 4.
If You Wanna Be My Guv’nor
Ali Muldrow tapped Gretta Wing Miller and Aarick Beher of Downtown Dailies to film, record and pull together the Rights Girls’ campaign video for Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, “If You Wanna Be My Guv’nor.”
Convenience
Convenience takes place at the old Stop-N-Go store on Winnebago Street. This four-minute piece is drawn from a show by TNW Ensemble Theater and Fresco Opera.
