2002 block party

Ohio Avenue 2002 Block Party

Perfect weather and neighbors from Talmadge Avenue and Jackson Street graced the 2002 Ohio Avenue Block Party on June 8, creating a gathering that "lived up to all the hype," according to one first-time attendee.

Activities at this year's party included a stellar rendition of "Puff the Magic Dragon" by Nicholas under Jim and Janice's fabulous balloon arch, and the outdoor premiere of Gretta Miller's Sid Boyum documentary.

Once residents cleared their cars from the block and volunteers errected the barricades (how about that mighty, mighty Metro?), the party started with a bang thanks to drummers Maia and Ritt, who led the block party's second parade. The crowd, with a dragon in its midst, wound its way down LaFollette to Jackson, down Bashford and along Talmadge. People stepped out from their homes to wave and gawk to the marchers, who banged drummers, blew kazoos, shook maracas and clacked castanets.

Dinner started after parade, followed by the block photo and the talent show. Add to this report ...
